Eighth-Inning Rally Pushes Herd over Canisius in Series Opener

Saturday will now be a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A late rally in the bottom of the eighth combined with great pitching sent the Marshall University baseball team (7-4) to a 3-2 win over the Canisius Golden Griffins (2-7) in the series opener on Friday at the Kennedy Center.

Bryce Blevins saw his record improve to 3-1 as Ryan Capuano earned his third save.

"We pitched and played defense. If you pitch and play defense, that keeps you in ballgames," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "Give their starting pitcher credit. (Matt) Duffy threw the ball really well to put those zeros on the board early. Give our guys credit to keep competing. The thing I liked was our two-strike approach and our willingness to continue to compete throughout the game."

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth with one out, Amari Bartee sent a 1-2 pitch over the right-field fence to cut the deficit in half with his first homer of the season. Daniel Carinci then doubled down the right-field line as Luke Edwards followed with a two bagger to left to score Carinci and tie the game, 2-2.

Kyle Schaefer then came to the plate. After Edwards stole third, Schaefer doubled to left to score Edwards and give MU its first lead of the game, 3-2, as he extended his hitting streak to 11 games.

"Honestly, I wasn't even thinking about it. I was just trying to put together a good two-strike at bat for my teammates," Schaefer said on his game-winning hit and extending his hit streak. "I was 0-for-3 and the starter was shoving it. He put up seven zeroes, then we got to the bullpen and did what we had to do."

Capuano shut the door down in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning on 10 pitches.

Patrick Copen and Bryce Blevins helped keep the Thundering Herd in the ballgame as it had just one hit going to the eighth. Copen, who started the contest, struck out seven batters in 6.0 innings on the mound while giving up just two runs on four hits and two walks.

Blevins then sat down five of the seven batters he faced via the strikeout, giving up just one hit in two scoreless frames.

Edward's double moves him into a tie with Eric Pinkerton for second in program history. He's three away from topping Victor Gomez's all-time mark of 48.
