Carinci, Edwards, Schaefer each collect three hits
ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall University baseball team (14-16) used a seven-run second inning to get back in the win column in an 8-6 road win over the Ohio Bobcats (13-16) on Tuesday night.
"We needed a win today, no doubt about it," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "We were able to ride that big second inning by stringing a bunch of hits together. We strung hits together all night long. We were in positon several times, but we just missed that two-out hit to get some extra runs."
Marshall put up a seven spot in the top of the second. Gio Ferraro led off the inning with a single and stole second. The Herd then struck for runs on a Chris Noble RBI single, an Elijah Vogelsong fielder's choice, a Luke Edwards run-scoring base knock and an Owen Ayers RBI double. Daniel Carinci capped off the inning with a three-run homer to left to make it 7-0 Herd. It was the fifth-year senior's third longball of the season.
"Great outing by Drew Harlow coming out of the bullpen and putting three big zeros up for us," Beals commented on Drew Harlow's effort in the win.
The bullpen threw some big innings for Marshall. Cole Agemy fired 1.2 scoreless frames with Harlow picking up his fifth win of the season by hurling 3.0 scoreless frames, allowing just a hit and striking out five.
"Eddie got the two quick outs which helps things. He let a couple of guys on base, but got the last out. He sinks the ball really well," Beals said about Eddie Leon earning the save. "He made it interesting in the ninth inning, but it's good to be back in the win column."
Leon earned his second save of the season with a scoreless ninth by stranding a pair of Bobcats to end the game.
Kyle Schaefer hit a solo blast in the top of the sixth, tying Ayers and Ferraro for the team-lead.
Ferraro has reached base safely in the last 17 games.
Carinci is on a six-game hit streak with his 3-for-5 effort with five multi-hit games during the streak. His three RBI are a season-high.
MU also had five other multi-hit efforts in the ballgame, with Edwards and Schaefer joining Carinci with three hits each.
