Ayers, Ferraro Homer in Loss to Georgia Southern

Ayers, Edwards record multi-hit contests

Box Score

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (15-21, 4-12 Sun Belt) collected homers from Owen Ayers and Gio Ferraro, but fell 16-4 in the series opener to the Georgia Southern Eagles (19-19, 9-7 Sun Belt) Friday at the Kennedy Center.

"We left guys on base," Thundering Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the contest. "When I do our hitting numbers, collectively they aren't bad, but we didn't get the hit we needed to. We hit into the double play, and we get guys in scoring position and strikeout. We're missing that big hit."

Ferraro launched his fifth homer of the season, a two-run blast, to right field with two outs in the bottom of the fifth as Ayers launched his team-leading sixth longball to the same area to lead off the bottom of the seventh.

Christian Lucio tallied the Herd's first run of the contest with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second, plating Eddie Leon. Lucio extended his on-base streak to seven and his streak to six games with the base hit.

Reliever Cole Agemy threw three scoreless frames out of the bullpen allowing just two hits and striking out five.

With two hits, including his ninth double of the season, Luke Edwards registered his team-best 13th multi-hit game of the season with Ayers recording his 12th.

Ferraro now leads Marshall with eight multi-RBI contests.
