Box Score
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Starting pitcher Raymond Pacella struck out a season-high nine batters as the Marshall University baseball team (15-22, 4-13 Sun Belt) fell 6-1 to the Georgia Southern Eagles (20-19, 10-7 Sun Belt) Saturday in game two of the series at the Kennedy Center.
Â
"Ray pitched his tail off," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said of his starting pitcher's performance. "His pitch count got high, but he was pitching so well that we stuck with him. We had a chance in that second inning, where they scored runs,to make some plays. I think that whole inning is unearned. We need to make that play on the groundball to second base."
Â
Pacella's nine punch outs came in a career-high 8.1 innings on the bump. He allowed six runs, only two earned, on seven hits and two walks. Three of the six runs came after a two-out error in the second inning.
Â
With a double in the sixth and his team-leading seventh homer of the season in the eighth, Owen Ayers recorded his 13th multi-hit game of the season and extended his hit streak to six games.
Â
Kyle Schaefer also extended his hit streak to six games with a single in the fourth.
Â
Reliever Nicholas Weyrich recorded two outs in the ninth without giving up a run in relief of Pacella.
