Addkison hurls quality start
Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – A Zac Addkison quality start and four-run first inning powered the Marshall University baseball team (16-22, 5-13 Sun Belt) to an 8-1 win in Sunday's series finale against the Georgia Southern Eagles (20-20, 10-8 Sun Belt) at the Kennedy Center.
"I think the big key is the four runs in the bottom of the first," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said of his team's offensive outburst in the first. "One, you get the big hit from (Amari) Bartee to bust things open. What that does is allow your pitching staff to settle in, and we haven't had many opportunities to pitch relatively stress free. Those four runs give you an opportunity to not have to worry about every single pitch being the difference in the ballgame. It obviously gave us a lead, but what it meant to the pitching staff was huge."
Marshall wasted little time getting on the board. Luke Edwards led off the bottom of the first with a single up the middle and proceeded to steal second, his 11th steal of the season. After Owen Ayers moved him to third, Daniel Carinci doubled to left center to plate Edwards and give MU a 1-0 lead.
Two batters later, Marshall had Kyle Schaefer at second and Carinci at third with two outs and Amari Bartee at the plate. With a 2-2 count, Bartee blasted his second homer of the season to give the Thundering Herd a 4-0 advantage. The three-RBI day marked a season-high for Bartee.
Addkison threw a gem on the mound against the Eagles. The junior right-handed pitcher threw 6.0 innings of one-run baseball, giving up just two hits and five walks while striking out seven Georgia Southern batters in his third quality start of the season. All three quality starts have come during conference play.
The MU bullpen shut it down in relief of Addkison. Drew Harlow came on to throw scoreless seventh and eighth frames, striking out three and only giving up a bunt single. Closer Ryan Capuano registered a perfect ninth with a pair of punch outs.
Marshall added a pair of runs in the fifth on an Edwards sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Carinci.
Kebler Peralta brought home Bartee and Gio Ferraro in the eighth with a one-out double.
Carinci and Peralta's multi-RBI performances marked their fourth and third such games this season, respectively.
Ayers and Schaefer each extended their hitting streaks to six games, with Carinci seeing his move to five contests.
"First of all we have to take care of exam week. I want to make sure our guys take care of business in the classroom. We'll give them a couple of days to relax from a baseball standpoint and focus on the academics. Then we'll get back to work on Wednesday. I want the vibe of today to continue. We talk about our energy, our competitive energy, and playing at a pace. We did that today. We had the lead; it's easier to do it when you have the lead. I want us to play like that all the time regardless of the scoreboard," Beals said about finals week and heading into a big series at Georgia State this weekend.
