Carinci three hits; Edwards drives in four runs

ATLANTA – The Marshall University baseball team (16-23, 5-14 Sun Belt) tallied eight runs in the final three innings, but fell 17-9 in its series opener in Atlanta on Friday night against the Georgia State Panthers (22-21, 9-10 Sun Belt).

"We struggled with the strike zone early and really helped them out," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "They are a dangerous offense when they are hitting in good counts. We need to control the zone early and be able to hit with an off-speed pitch. It was good to see the fight in the late innings."

Going 3-for-4 at the plate, Daniel Carinci recorded his fourth contest of three or more hits this season and extended his hitting streak to six games.

Luke Edwards also had a big night at the plate. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native smoked his fifth homer of the season in the seventh as part of a season-high four-RBI evening.

With his 18th double of the season, Owen Ayers is four from tying Eric Pinkerton's record of 22 set in 2000 and extended his hit streak to seven consecutive contests.

Ayers and Edwards each registered their 14th multi-hit games of the season as it was Carinci's 13th of the campaign.

Marshall finishes its series against the Panthers with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in Atlanta.
