Single-season doubles leader
CONWAY, S.C. – Owen Ayers makes program history as the Marshall University baseball team (16-37, 5-25 Sun Belt) fell in both games of a doubleheader to the eighth-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (37-17, 23-7 Sun Belt) on Saturday to end the 2023 season.
"Tough day and final stretch of the season," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "We continued to show fight and I believe we continued to grow as a program. I love this group of seniors and they will be a part of The Herd for life. Those of us returning also know we have a ton of work to do."
With a pair of doubles in game two, Ayers passed Eric Pinkerton's record of 22 doubles in a season with 23 to set the new program single-season record.
"Owen is a really good hitter and I look forward to him continuing to develop his game, Beals commented about Ayers.
Game 1 - No. 8 Coastal Carolina 19, Marshall 2
In the top of the fourth, Gio Ferraro homered down the right-field line for his seventh long ball of the season.
Cam Harthan then hit a solo blast, his first of the season, to right field in the fifth.
Game 2 - No. 8 Coastal Carolina 10, Marshall 9
Ayers did not waste any time breaking the single-season doubles record in program history in the season finale. Needing two doubles coming into the contest, he doubled in the first and second innings to reach 23 and set the record.
The Herd tallied four runs in the second. Harthan had an RBI double; Ayers record-breaking double scored two and a Daniel Carinci double brought home Ayers.
Calin Smith then hit his third homer of the season on a solo shot to right in the top of third.
In the top of the seventh, Ferraro hit his team-leading eighth longball of the season with his second on the day.
Luke Edwards, a native of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, launched a homer to left in his final at bat in a Herd uniform.
The Herd tallied a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but the rally came up short.
