Herd Baseball Battles in Loss at Virginia Tech

Smith records career-high three hits

Box Score

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-26) lost a hard, fought road contest on Wednesday, 5-3, to the Virginia Tech Hokies (26-16) in Blacksburg, Virginia.

"We played a really good baseball game against a really good team," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after ballgame. "If we can take away one of their big hits and put a big hit in our spot, it'd be a different ballgame. But that's not the case; that's baseball. We have to find a way to thrive in that competition and be that guy when you need a big hit. We had 10 hits today. I liked our approach offensively. I thought we played good defense and pitched the ball pretty darn well. They had a couple big homeruns and we couldn't get the big hit when we needed it."

The MU pitching staff allowed five runs, only four earned, on seven hits in the contest. Starting pitcher Raymond Pacella struck out a pair of VT batters in a scoreless first. Chad Heiner came on in relief and was a workhorse on the mound hurling 4.1 innings while allowing just three hits and striking out two.

All three of Marshall's runs came in the top of the eighth, as Kyle Schaefer recorded a two-run scoring single and Calin Smith had a RBI base knock.

The top of order of Luke Edwards, Owen Ayers and Daniel Carinci all recorded two-hit efforts as Smith tallied a career-high three hits in the six hole.

Ayers and Edwards each recorded their 16th multi-hit games of the season as it marked Carinci's 14th, extending his hit streak to nine games.

Closer Ryan Capuano threw a scoreless bottom of eighth, lowering his ERA to 2.41 this season.
