Herd Baseball Prepares to Host JMU in Charleston

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-26, 5-16 Sun Belt) gets back into Sun Belt Conference action with a three-game series in Charleston against the James Madison Dukes (24-20, 9-10 Sun Belt) beginning on Friday.

Owen Ayers ranks second in the Sun Belt, 24th nationally, with 18 doubles this season. He sits four from tying and five from breaking Eric Pinkerton's single-season program record of 22 set in 2000. Ayers also leads Marshall with seven homers and 31 RBI this season.

With 56 hits and 13 stolen bases, Luke Edwards leads MU in both categories. The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, native ranks third all-time in program history with 238 hits and fourth in RBI with 132.

Daniel Carinci's .318 batting average leads the squad as the native of Ajax, Ontario, Canada, is on a nine-game hitting streak.

Friday's scheduled starting pitcher Patrick Copen has 70 strikeouts this season, fourth most in the Sun Belt.

Raymond Pacella, who is scheduled to start Saturday's contest, has the most starts in the conference this season at 13.

Closer Ryan Capuano has five saves this season to go with a 2.41 ERA.

Scouting James Madison
The Dukes enter the weekend is coming off a 9-8 loss at No. 21 Virginia on Wednesday.

JMU is second in the SBC with a .302 batting average, .009 behind Coastal Carolina's .311.

Fenwick Trimble leads the conference with 19 doubles this season.
