CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-27, 5-17 Sun Belt) dropped the series opener to the James Madison Dukes (25-20, 10-10 Sun Belt), 13-6, on Friday night at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston.

"I thought early in the game we were competing. We hit some balls hard. We got ourselves in position," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the loss. "The sixth and seventh innings were atrocious baseball. We gave up seven free bases and gave them three runs in the sixth inning. I'm not taking anything away from them. They earned the win today, no doubt about it. But we fueled them."

With a single in the bottom of the ninth, Daniel Carinci extended his sit streak to 10 games. He joins Luke Edwards, Kyle Schaefer and Gio Ferraro to have a hit streak of 10 or more games this season.

Kyle Schaefer went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles for his 11th multi-hit game of the season.

Cam Harthan cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple in the bottom of the seventh and brought home Schaefer with a sacrifice fly in the eighth for a career-high four-RBI in the contest.

Reliever Peyton Schofield hurled a scoreless ninth inning.

Marshall looks to rebound in game two on Saturday at 3 p.m. against the Dukes in Charleston at GoMart Ballpark.
