Herd Baseball Falls Saturday to JMU

Schaefer hits sixth homerun

Box Score

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-28, 5-18 Sun Belt) fell 7-3 in game two of its series against the James Madison Dukes (26-20, 11-10 Sun Belt) on Saturday at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston.

"We had a game plan and we executed our game plan (early), Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the contest. "My biggest concern is our ability to stay focused and stay committed throughout the game. When things don't go well, that it doesn't change the player, it doesn't change the approach, it doesn't change how we go about the game. This ballclub is just carrying more with them than they need to carry with them to be good."

MU got the offense started early as Luke Edwards doubled to leftfield to lead off the bottom of the first. After an Owen Ayers walk and a Daniel Carinci sacrifice bunt, the Herd had runners at second and third with one out as Kyle Schaefer stepped to the plate. Schaefer blasted a 1-1 offering over the wall in right for his sixth homerun of the season.

The three-RBI homer netted Schaefer his team-leading ninth multi-RBI game of the season, including his second of three or more.

Ayers registered his 19th double of the season in the bottom of sixth bringing him three away from tying Eric Pinkerton's program record of 22 set in 2000. The Sarasota, Florida, native also collected a single in the eighth for his team-leading 17th multi-hit effort of the year as he reached base safely for the 13th consecutive game.

Starting pitcher Raymond Pacella started his 6.0 inning outing with four scoreless frames, striking out three in those first four innings.

Carinci saw his 10-game hit streak come to an end in the contest.
