RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 1 Marshall University men's soccer team (9-0) secured its sixth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win on the road over the VCU Rams (1-4-4) in Richmond, Virginia, to close non-conference play and September on Wednesday.
The win matches the team's program record nine-match win streak set in 1997 and breaks its winning streak of eight matches against Division I opponents set during the same year.
"Tough one tonight," Herd men's soccer head coach Chris Grassie said after the contest. "Credit to Coach Giffard and VCU. They were very organized and hard to break down. I thought we weren't at our best, but I'm incredibly proud of our grit tonight to stick to our game plan and fight until the last whistle. (Joao Roberto) Alaba was excellent when he went on, and so happy for him to get the assist. And Theo's (Godard) finish capped a terrific performance on his return. I think he hit it hard enough to knock the casing off it!"
The lone goal of the contest came in the 77th minute as Matthew Bell attacked down the left wing, found Joao Roberto. Roberto in turn dished a pass to Theo Godard who slipped the ball into the bottom left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
The assist was Roberto's first of the season with Bell registering his sixth assist in 2023 and extending his point streak to five straight matches.
Gabriel Perrotta played a huge role in preserving the win for MU recording his ninth win and fifth solo shutout of the season. The Paraguayan goalkeeper made a pair of saves in the first half. Perrotta then came up with three, crucial second-half stops, including a pair of close attempts 19 seconds apart at the 64:49 and 65:08 marks.
The Herd outshot the Rams 18-9 with each side recording five shots on goal.
