Marshall’s Kylee Mastin wins Gold in the Mile
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Marshall track and field concluded the indoor season with a strong collective finish at the SBC Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
The Herd women finished 4th out of 13 teams with 61 points, which is the highest team total in program history for an indoor conference championship meet. The previous high was set at the CUSA Indoor Championships in 2021 (6/12-50 pts.).
"Today was an historic day for Marshall track and field," Director of Track and Field Keith Roberts said. "Our women earned the highest finish in school history at an indoor championship meet. Abby Herring and Kylee Mastin led the way with Sun Belt victories and double digit scoring. Their effort and determination spread throughout the entire team. We also picked up big points from Dianna Goodman who finished runner-up in the pole vault. Tyra Thomas improved her school record in the 60 hurdles while scoring for the team, and Lara Check secured a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon. Our program is on the rise and we are looking forward to outdoor season."
Marshall's Kylee Mastin led the Herd with a gold medal in the women's mile, winning a sprint-off with a time of 4:54.80.
In the men's program's second season since returning, the team finished 7th with a total of 19 points.
"The men's team, in the second year since returning, is young and growing everyday," Roberts said. "We had strong performances from Ronnie Saunders, Evan White and Kazuma Bowring. Our young guys have some good people to look up to and that is crucial for our development. We had great team support and that energy and effort will help build the foundation of this team. We have really focused on the little things and building championship culture as we continue getting better each day."
Other highlights for Marshall included Tyra Thomas setting a school record in the 60 meter hurdles (8.33) to finish 5th. Dianna Goodman vaulted to a new indoor personal best with a 3.98 meter vault, finishing 2nd. For the men, Ronnie Saunders and Kazuma Bowring finished 5th and 6th in the mile and 800. The men's 4x400 relay of Ethan Bowens, Isaiah Harper, Joshua Roush, and Isaiah Valentine finished 6th with a time of 3:19.72.
