CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (6-10) fell in its first of three contests this season, 11-2, against the West Virginia Mountaineers (10-7) Tuesday night in Charleston, West Virginia, at GoMart Ballpark.

"We played a really good baseball team tonight, that played a really good game," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "Similar to what they did tonight, we're doing the same thing. We're trying to get guys into the game and get them some game experience, so that they're sharp and ready to go for conference play. We start conference play on Friday. We're going to need our bullpen to be ready to go."

The Herd struck earlier as Tre Hondras scored on an Owen Ayers fielder's choice and Ayers crossed home on a Gio Ferraro double to make it 2-0 after the top of the first.

Caden Kaiser went 2-for-3 with a double for his fifth multi-hit game of the season. Ayers joined Ferraro and Kaiser with a double in the sixth.

Reliever Peyton Schofield threw a perfect 1.1 innings starting the bottom of the seventh and recording the first out in the eighth by striking out three of his four batters faced.

"It was really good for us to see Schofield, our left-handed pitcher, come in and we're going to need that left-handed piece out in our bullpen. He was good tonight," Beals said about Schofield's performance.

A six-run bottom of the third put the Mountaineers in front with Marshall being unable to comeback.
