Herd Baseball Drops SBC Opener at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall University Baseball team (6-11, 0-1 Sun Belt) dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday night, 8-4, to Southern Miss (12-6, 1-0 Sun Belt) in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

"I hate losing, but love playing in big games and our guys competed really well," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the contest. "We simply helped their offense too much with a couple plays we should have made and free bases. Really happy for (Cam) Harthan who had a big day offensively and, I thought (Drew) Harlow pitched better than his fate tonight. We got another strong performance from (Peyton) Schofield out of the pen as well. That team is in the top echelon of our conference, and we fought them to the end. We look forward to getting back at them tomorrow."

The Herd struck for a pair of runs in each of the third and seventh innings. Gio Ferraro tallied Marshall's first two runs of the contest with a two-RBI double that scored Cam Harthan and Tre Hondras.

Then in the seventh, Elijah Vogelsong hit his third homer of the season as Owen Ayers brought home Harthan with a ground out.

Harthan went a perfect 3-for-3 at the dish and reached base in all of four of his plate appearances also drawing a walk. Hondras also recorded a multi-hit game with a pair of singles and also drawing a free pass.

Out of the bullpen Peyton Schofield registered his second consecutive scoreless outing across the seventh and eighth innings. The lefty allowed just two hits and a walk while facing seven batters and inducing two double plays.
