HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Marshall University Baseball team (6-12, 0-2 Sun Belt) fell in a pitching duel to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (13-6, 2-0 Sun Belt), 2-1, in 13 innings on Saturday.
Â
Bryce Blevins and Nicholas Weyrich combined to throw 13.1 innings giving up just three hits and two walks.
Â
"We played our tails off today!" Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game.
Â
Blevins hurled a gem on the mound. The sophomore lefty went 9.0-plus innings on the bump, including the first 7.1 hitless. Blevins exited to a standing ovation on the road at Pete Taylor Park after just 90 pitches allowing only one run on two hits and a walks.
Â
Elijah Vogelsong broke up USM starter Billy Oldham's no-hitter with a one-out homer in the top of the eighth for the first hit and run of the ballgame.
Â
The Golden Eagles answered with a Davis Gillespie homer in the bottom half of the inning to tie the contest 1-1.
Â
Nicholas Weyrich came on in relief of Blevins with a runner on in the ninth. The right-handed reliever struck out five Southern Miss batters across 3.1 innings giving up just one hit and one run, that was unearned.
Â
In the bottom of the 13th, Southern Miss won the game after the umpires overturned a call at the plate, ruling Owen Ayers to be impeding the USM runner on what would have been the second out of the inning on a throw from right field by Calin Smith.
Â
Ayers and Vogelsong each had multi-hit games, with Ayers recording his fifth and sixth doubles of the season.
