POINT CLEAR, Ala. – Junior Emily McLatchey and freshman Kasey McIlvaine are both in the top-20 after day one of the Sun Belt Women's Golf Championships at The Lakewood Club in Point Clear, Alabama.
Both players shot a 1-over 73 to end the day tied for 18th in the individual standings.
As a team, the 11th-seeded Herd is currently tied for 9th and is within striking distance of moving into the upper echelon of the standings.
"I'm proud of the fight I saw today from everyone," Marshall Women's Golf coach Brooke Burkhammer said. "We made some great saves and know what we need to improve on for tomorrow."
Consistency was critical for both McLatchey and McIlvaine on their days. McLatchey's day started off strong with a birdie at No. 10 as she made the turn at 1-over. After a bogey at No. 2, she followed with a birdie at No. 4 to finish Even over her final nine holes of the day.
In her first SBC Championship, McIlvaine was dialed in early, notching a birdie on No. 11 – her 2nd hole of the day. After consecutive bogeys at Nos. 15 and 16, McIlvaine finished with 11 straight pars to solidify her stance in the top-20.
Olivia Kochan settled after a tough start to go 1-over in her last 10 holes of the day for a 4-over 76. Abbey Bull also led the Herd with three birdies on the day.
"I'm excited to get back out there in the morning to see our team compete," Burkhammer said.
Marshall will take off from Hole No. 10, starting at 8 a.m., to begin its second round of action.
