STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-27, 6-13 Sun Belt) fell 14-4 in eight innings in the series opener on Friday night in Statesboro, Georgia, to the Georgia Southern Eagles (21-21, 10-9 Sun Belt).

"Disappointing start to the series - we gave up way too many free bases to our opponent to win," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "Drew Harlow has been so good for us, but unfortunately tonight wasn't his night. A few bright spots are Lenny Washington's outing and our offense hit the ball hard as a whole. Give credit to the Georgia Southern defense which made several very good plays."

All four of the Herd's runs were scored in the top of the first. Owen Ayers extended his on-base streak to 20 games with a one-out single in the inning and later scored on a passed ball.

Elijah Vogelsong then hit his team-best seventh home run of the season to score AJ Havrilla and Tre Hondras to make it 4-0 Marshall in the top of the first.

Out of the bullpen, Lenny Washington 2.2 innings without giving up hit and allowed an unearned run on a pair of walks with two strikeouts after coming in to start the fifth inning.

The Eagles plated seven runs in the bottom of the first while adding a pair in the second, one in each of the fourth and seventh innings, and three in the eighth.
