Senior becomes first player in program history with multiple seasons of 20 or more doubles
Â
RICHMOND, Ky. – Owen Ayers made Marshall University Baseball history on Tuesday night with his 20th double of the season to become the first player in program history with multiple seasons of 20 or more doubles at EKU.
Â
The Herd (13-30) fell to the Colonels (13-31) on the road, 12-5.

"We continue to give our opponents too many free base runners - we simply have to pitch better," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "It was good to see (Bauer) Burkart and (Charlie) Krebs, two true freshmen make their collegiate debuts tonight - we held EKU scoreless twice tonight, one for Burkart and one for Krebs - that was a positive. Offensively, we need to do a better job of hitting with runners in scoring position. Owen Ayers had another good night at the plate collecting 3 hits and his 20tj double. Looking forward to playing at home tomorrow night."
Â
Ayers, who went 3-for-5 in the contest, inched closer to his single-season program record of 23 doubles he set last season with his 19th and 20th doubles of 2024. The Sarasota, Florida, native sits at 43 career doubles, fourth most in program history 12 away from tying Luke Edwards' program mark of 55.
Â
Ayers scored on an AJ Havrilla sacrifice fly in the third, while bringing home Jack Firestone with a double in the eighth, before scoring again as Havrilla chased him home again with a single in the same inning. Havrilla recorded his eighth multi-RBI game of the season.
Â
In the fourth, Kebler Peralta scored Calin Smith with a single with Tre Hondras collecting RBI on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch in the eighth.
Â
Bauer Burkart and Charlie Krebs each made their collegiate debuts and struck out their first batters. Krebs struck out the side in the seventh to end his first inning pitched for The Herd.
