Herd falls in game one at JMU
HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (16-33, 8-17 Sun Belt) fell 8-5 in game one to the James Madison Dukes (29-19, 14-11 Sun Belt) on the road Friday night in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
"Tough loss tonight - we played a solid game but walked the lead-off man twice leading to runs and had a few opportunities to make plays on defense and missed," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "Offensively we missed a big chance in the second inning. We get back at them early tomorrow."
Owen Ayers produced a 3-for-4 contest with his 23rd double of the season to tie the single-season program record he set last season. The two-bagger scored Cam Harthan in the top of the fifth.
Gio Ferraro brought home a pair of runs, including a solo homer for his fourth of the season in the eighth.
The Herd's first run came on a Ferraro sacrifice fly that scored Harthan in the top of the first. Harthan then singled in Jack Firestone in the fourth before Tre Hondras scored on a pick off error by the pitcher in the same inning.
Out of the bullpen, Peyton Schofield threw a one-hit, scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts.
The Dukes tallied two runs in each of the third, sixth and eighth innings.
