HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (16-32) takes down the Ohio Bobcats (14-29), 7-4, on Wednesday night at Jack Cook Field.
"We have a big couple weeks left in the season and we're on a mission," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the win. "I liked today's win. Pushed a lot of buttons, used a lot of players."
Jack Firestone had a big day at the plate going 1-for-2 with a home run, three runs scored, two RBI and drawing a pair of walks. Jack Smith brought home a career-high three RBI and collected the first double of his career.
"It was great," Firestone said about his performance. "It was good to face them again. I faced them in my last game in the MAC. I kind of knew how they were going to pitch me after seeing them a couple of times. I was able to relax and have fun tonight."
On the mound, Chad Heiner started with 5.1 innings giving up three runs on five hits and four walks. Out of the bullpen, Charlie Krebs, Bauer Burkart, Peyton Schofield and Cole Agemy combined to throw the final 3.2 frames without giving up a hit. Schofield earned his first win of the season with Agemy picking up his first save.
Firestone's third homer of the season gave MU it's first run in the bottom of the fourth as he scored the team's second run in the sixth on a Jack Smith sacrifice bunt.
Marshall's offense exploded for four runs in the seventh. Caden Kaiser crossed home on a Firestone bases loaded walk, a Tre Hondras brought home AJ Havrilla with an RBI single and a double by Smith brought home Elijah Vogelsong and Firestone to make it 6-3.
The Herd added an insurance run in the eighth as Kaiser stole home.
