Miller records quality start

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (12-11, 2-3 SBC) dropped game two, 5-4, to the James Madison Dukes (8-15, 3-2 SBC) on Saturday evening at Jack Cook Field in Huntington.

"The start was Griffin Miller pitched a great game," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the game. "Their guy pitched well too. Griffin pounded the lower part of the zone and hit with his breaking ball. Unfortunately, we didn't reward him from a team standpoint. It was a great outing and an outing that gives our ballclub a chance to win."

Starting pitcher Griffin Miller recorded a quality start with 7.1 innings on the hill allowing just two runs on five walks and two hits with four strikeouts. The sophomore had a no-hitter through six innings before a leadoff bunt single by JMU's Kyle Langley broke up the bid in the top of the seventh.

The Herd tallied the first run of the game on a Cam Harthan safety squeeze bunt with Eddie Leon crossing home.

Down 5-1 in the bottom of the eighth, Jackson Halter doubled down left field line to score Maika Niu with his first RBI of the game to make it 5-2.

Halter then drew a bases loaded walk to plate Will Lafferty in the bottom of the ninth. AJ Havrilla drove home Niu with a sacrifice fly for his 21st RBI of the season. MU ended the game with the tying at third with the ninth inning rally coming up short.

Niu had his team-leading ninth multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles.
