HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (18-19) lost in a 5-4 heartbreaker to the West Virginia Mountaineers (31-4) Tuesday night at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It's a tough loss," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "I thought our guys played their tails off tonight and we had ourselves in position (to win the game)."
Â
Joel Gardner got his first collegiate start at first base collecting his first Division I hits on a pair of doubles along with his first RBI. Eddie Leon and Jackson Halter also drove in runs in the contest.
Â
Peyton Jackson, Kenyon Collins, Blaine Albright and Tim Baird all registered a pair of strikeouts as Fenix DiGiacomo threw a scoreless sixth.
Â
The Mountaineers struck first with a two-RBI double from Grant Hussey in the top of the second.
Â
However, The Herd would answer with four runs. Tyler Kamerer scored off a throwing error on a failed WVU fielder's choice as Elijah Vogelsong crossed home on an Eddie Leon sacrifice bunt to tie the ballgame 2-2 through two innings.
Â
Halter then brought home Cam Harthan with a two-out single in the fourth as Gardner scored Nolan Wilson on a two-out double in the fifth to go up 4-2.
Â
The Mountaineers tied the contest with a pair of runs in the seventh and scored the eventual game-winning run on a Chase Swain steal of home in the eighth.
Â
