HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall freshman pitcher Clint Moak allowed just three hits in seven innings of shutout baseball to lead the Thundering Herd to a 4-0 win over South Alabama in front of 1,274 fans at Jack Cook Field on Sunday.
With the win, Marshall secured a sweep in Sun Belt Conference action and moved to 23-22 overall and 9-12 in league play.
"Getting the sweep and winning today, that's taking care of business," Beals said. "We needed that. We're climbing the ladder in the standings, and we've got three weeks left to continue doing the same thing."
The third inning proved to be the difference in the game as Moak induced a two-out pop-out to strand two runners, which gave the Herd momentum.
In the bottom half, the Herd offense executed well as Cam Harthan's single and Nolan Wilson's walk produced a pair of runners to lead off the frame. After Jackson Halter's sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, Maika Niu's groundout scored Harthan before A.J. Havrilla singled to score Wilson to forge a 2-0 lead.
That was plenty for Moak, who allowed one baserunner over the next 11 batters before a one-out triple by South Alabama's Ethan Melton. Moak calmly got a groundout to third base and a strikeout to preserve the shutout and end his day.
Marshall's Blaine Albright came in for a scoreless eighth inning and Tim Baird slammed the door with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to end it.
Marshall's pitchers kept the Jaguars' top five hitters hitless as they combined to go 0-for-18 on the day.
The Herd got insurance runs for Moak in the sixth and seventh innings to forge the final score. Harthan singled in Elijah Vogelsong in the sixth before Ethan Murdoch notched an infield single that Tyler Kamerer hustled home from second on for the game's final run.
Harthan and Murdock each had two hits for the Herd, who has now won five straight games.
Marshall now sets its sights on a 6 p.m. contest against nationally-ranked West Virginia at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston.
