CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (24-22) earned a 7-6 walk off victory over the No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers (37-6) on Wednesday night at GoMart Ballpark in Charleston, West Virginia.
Â
The win extended MU's winning streak to six and marks the team's fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season.
Â
"It's a big win for us," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "What an unbelievable crowd celebrating baseball in the state of West Virginia with the in-state rivalry. That's a really good baseball team West Virginia has and that's a big win for us. Most importantly relative to our ballclub is six wins in a row now going into conference play and keeping that momentum going."
Â
Tied 6-6, runners at first and second with one out in the top of the ninth, Tyler Kamerer stepped to the plate. With a 2-0 count, the second baseman hit a grounder to Mountaineer third baseman Chase Swain who threw the ball away allowing AJ Havrilla to score on the walk off.
Â
Charlie Krebs, who earned his fourth win of the season, threw 3.0 perfect innings with a strikeout. The sophomore right-hander came on with runners at first and second with no outs and induced a double play and another ground out to get out of the inning.
Â
Catcher Jackson Golden had a big day at the plate. The freshman hit his first collegiate homer in the fourth scoring Cam Harthan, who had a two-out RBI double before Golden's at bat. Golden then tied the game with a one-out single, scoring Harthan and Joel Gardner in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
Harthan had a two-hit night with another double in the sixth.
Â
MU's first run of the game came in the bottom of the first on Havrilla's fourth homer of the season.
Â
In relief, Luke Proehl had a trio of strikeouts in 2.0 innings on bump.
