Niu has a multi-homer game
HAMPTON, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (25-22, 10-12 SBC) opened its series at Old Dominion (15-26, 10-12 SBC) with an 11-4 win on Friday at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Virginia.
The win extended The Herd's winning streak to seven games.
"Great way to open the series," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Our bats came out and gave our pitching staff a good lead to work with. Bryce Blevins got us deep into the game and competed his tail off again. We threw strikes and played great defense - a couple of big double plays, a diving catch from Halter in the outfield and great play from Kamerer in the infield to end the 8th. Big night from Micah Niu at the plate!"
Maika Niu went 3-for-6 at the plate with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Eddie Leon and AJ Havrilla each had a pair of hits and RBI with Leon registering a pair of doubles. Cam Harthan also had a pair of hits, including a double.
On the mound, Bryce Blevins earned his fifth win of the season, going 7.0 innings giving up four runs on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts. In relief, Peyton Jackson, Blaine Albright and Luke Proehl combined to keep ODU scoreless in the final two frames.
MU started off hot with three runs in the first. Havrilla got the scoring started with a RBI single scoring Jackson Halter. Then a Leon double tallied Niu with a Vogelsong groundout scoring Havrilla.
In the second, a Havrilla sacrifice fly plated Nolan Wilson to make it 4-0 as Harthan made it 5-0 with a run scoring double in the third.
After a two-run ODU homer in the bottom of the third, Marshall struck back with a Niu longball, Havrilla scoring on a Leon double, Leon crossing home on a wild pitch and Murdoch plating Elijah Vogelsong to make it 9-2.
The Monarchs hit another two-run homer in the sixth, but like clockwork, Niu answered with a two-run dinger of his own, scoring Halter and making it 11-2.
