Pair of two-out HRs not enough as Herd’s winning streak ends at 7
HAMPTON, Va. – Marshall Baseball dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial Stadium in Hampton, Va.
With the loss, Marshall sees its seven-game winning streak end as the Herd falls to 25-23 overall and 10-13 in Sun Belt Conference action.
"It was a tough game today for us," Marshall Baseball head coach Greg Beals said. "Our opponent pitched the ball well, leading to too many strikeouts on our part. We only gave them five free baserunners, but four of them scored. Give them credit – they had three two-out doubles that scored all their runs. We need to bounce back tomorrow and win a road series."
All nine runs scored by the teams combined came with two outs on Saturday.
Much like in Friday's matchup, Marshall jumped out to the early lead on the Monarchs, building a 4-1 advantage on the strength of a pair of two-out, two-run home runs in the early stages of the contest.
A.J. Havrilla continued his strong week of play, belting a two-run blast in the third inning to score he and Maika Niu with the game's first runs.
After ODU trimmed the lead in half in the bottom of the third, the Herd answered right back in the top of the fourth when Nolan Wilson's two-run blast clear the left field wall to bring he and Elijah Vogelsong in.
The fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Monarchs got key hits and the Herd struggled to plate runners in similar situations.
After Old Dominion used a three-run double in the fourth to tie it, Marshall again threatened, loading the bases in the fifth before a strikeout ended the frame.
The Monarchs then took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI single.
The Herd again had its chances in the seventh with a pair of runners in scoring position but could not get over the hump in the loss.
Havrilla and Eddie Leon combined for six of Marshall's eight hits in the contest with Havrilla finishing 3-for-4 with the two-run home run and Leon going 3-for-5. Wilson's home run and a single by Jackson Halter were the Herd's lone other hits.
The two teams return to War Memorial Stadium in Hampton at 1 p.m. on Sunday to finish out the critical three-game set in Sun Belt Conference action.
