Halter three-hit game; Havrilla, Wilson three RBI efforts
Â
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 4 Seed Marshall University Baseball team (32-24) earned a 9-5 win over the No. 5 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (26-30) to open the 2025 Sun Belt Conference Baseball Championship presented by Troy University Wednesday night in Montgomery, Alabama.
Â
"Just a good win for us to start off the tournament in the right way," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We've been playing good baseball here down the stretch and we continued to do so tonight. I liked our approach offensively, how we were able to get hits when we needed them and get innings started with contributions up and down the lineup."
Â
Jackson Halter notched his fourth three-hit game of the season which included a leadoff homer. AJ Havrilla and Nolan Wilson each went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI each with the contest marking their ninth contest each with multiple RBI.
Â
Bryce Blevins recorded his sixth win of the season with 5.1 innings on the bump, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. In relief, Nicholas Weyrich earned his sixth save of the season by recording the final out of the game.
Â
MU jumped on Louisiana early as Halter launched a leadoff homer, his third of the season, in the bottom of the first inning after 1-2-3 top half of the frame by Blevins.
Â
After a Tyler Kamerer leadoff double in the third, Halter drove him home with a double to left center to make it 2-0. After a Maika Niu single, Havrilla plated Halter with a single as Eddie Leon followed with a single to score Niu to make it 4-0. Wilson then reached on a fielder's choice to score Havrilla and conclude a four-run third with a 5-0 lead.
Â
The Ragin' Cajuns tallied a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but The Herd quickly answered with a one-out two-RBI single from Havrilla to score Cam Harthan and Halter to extend the lead back to 7-2.
Â
Elijah Vogelsong then led off the bottom of the seventh with a double as Wilson brought him home with his fifth homer of the year to make it 9-2.
Â
Louisiana scored three in the top of the eighth, but Charlie Krebs got out of a jam with an inning-ending double play.
Â
Weyrich then stranded a pair on the bases with the final out of the contest.
