HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (9-8, 1-0 SBC) opened Sun Belt Conference play with a 5-2 win over the Georgia State Panthers on Friday evening at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It's great to get the first one of the series and Sun Belt play," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "I really like how we played. We had competitive at bats. We played great defense. Obviously, Bryce Blevins was really good today, took us all the way into the ninth inning, and then Charlie Krebs came in and did what he did. Got a punch out and an out to shut it down for us. Really good ballgame all the way around and good to be on the winning side."
Â
Starting pitcher Bryce Blevins earned his fourth win of the season with 8.1 innings on the bump allowing just two runs on five hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts.
Â
Charlie Krebs came on from the bullpen retiring the two batters he faced for his third save of the season.
Â
At the plate, Evan Bottone and Cooper Hinson each had multi-hit contests with Cleary Simpson driving in two runs.
Â
The Herd gave Blevins run support early with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first with Botton scoring on a two-out single by Hinson and Ethan Murdoch scoring AJ Havrilla with a two-out double down the right-field line.
Â
Then in the fifth, Tyler Kamerer and Jackson Golden scored on a Simpson double down the right-field line. Simpson then crossed home on a Havrilla single to center to make it 5-0.
Â
Blevins had 1-2-3 third, fourth and sixth innings.
Â
Georgia State tallied both of its runs in the ninth, but Krebs came on for the final two outs and stranded a runner at second to end the game.
