HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (10-8, 2-0 SBC) clinched its opening Sun Belt Conference series with a 4-2 victory over the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday at Jack Cook Field.

"We got a great outing from Drew Harlow," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said about his starter after the game. "We had an error in the first inning that led to a run and a couple of free bases there. Other than that he really settled into the ballgame and was tough. Drew set the tempo for our ballclub. Then we did a lot of little things on the offensive side to help. We didn't bang the ball around the ballpark to score runs."

The Herd had its second straight contest with a starting pitcher registering 10 strikeouts as Drew Harlow fanned 10 in 8.0 innings. The graduate student allowed just two unearned runs on three hits and a walk for his second win of the season. Harlow recorded five 1-2-3 innings.

Tim Baird closed out the game with a perfect ninth, including a pair of strikeouts, for his second save of the season.

At the dish, Jack Smith went 2-for-3 with three RBI with Cooper Hinson also picking up a multi-hit game.

The Panthers took advantage of a Marshall error and striking in the top of the first with the opening run of the game.

MU then loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with AJ Havrilla drawing a walk, Hinson hitting a single and Oliver Service drawing a walk. Then with one out, Smith tied the game at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to score Havrilla.

The Herd offense broke the scoring open in the seventh. Service opened the inning with a single and was pinch ran for by Ben Cohen. Cleary Simpson then reached on an error seeing both move into scoring position on the error.

Smith then stepped up to the plate. The short stop sent a 1-1 offering to left for a two-RBI double to take a 3-1 lead. Evan Bottone added another run with a one-out single down the right-field line to score Smith.

GSU tallied a run on another Marshall error in the eighth, but Marshall held them off to secure the series.

"First of all we got the series win, that was the goal. You have 30 games in the conference schedule and every game counts. Tomorrow is another opportunity and we want to keep things flowing the way they're flowing," Beals said about trying for a series sweep on Sunday.
