HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-11, 5-2 SBC) dropped its series opener 11-9 to the No. 15 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (18-7, 7-0 SBC) Friday night at Jack Cook Field.
Â
Seven of MU's nine runs were scored with two outs.
Â
"Tough loss for us," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "I thought our guys competed really well. Give them (Coastal) credit. They're a good ball team. They had a real good approach off Bryce Blevins and was able to get to him. But we stayed in the fight pretty well. Our free bases ended up costing us."
Â
The top of the lineup with Evan Bottone, Tyler Kamerer and Jackson Halter all recorded two-hit games with Halter also drawing a pair of free passes. Halter, Cooper Hinson and Oliver Service all had two RBI in the contest.
Â
The Herd jumped on top early as Kamerer scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
Â
The Chanticleers answered with four runs in the top of the third to put Marshall at a 4-1 disadvantage. However, RBI doubles from Halter and Hinson with RBI singles from Service and Cleary Simpson in the bottom half of the frame, saw the home side grab a 5-4 lead after three innings.
Â
Coastal rallied with three runs in the top of the fourth with another in the sixth to go up 8-5. Halter cut into the deficit with a sacrifice fly to score Jack Smith in the bottom of the sixth to see the score at 8-6.
Â
The Chanticleers tallied three runs in the top of the eighth to take an 11-6 lead. The Herd answered in the bottom of the frame with Havrilla being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded with Hinson and Service drawing bases-loaded walks to cut it to a two-run ballgame, 11-9. However, the Herd stranded the bases loaded to end the inning and couldn't mount a comeback in the ninth as it fell in the series opener.
