Â
BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (5-6) used an offensive outburst to capture a 13-4 win on Tuesday night in Blacksburg, Virginia, over the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Â
"It's great to get a road win. Especially against a power-four, ACC opponent and a good opponent," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Virginia Tech is a good ball club. They're going to win a lot of games. I really like how we competed."
Â
Alex Caudill started on the bump striking out four in 3.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks. Landen Doll earned the win coming out of the bullpen with eight punchouts in 6.0 innings giving up one run on four hits and one walk for his first collegiate win.
Â
"The story of the day is how Landen Doll pitched," Beals said. "He pitched really well for us and had control of the game. That's why he was able to stay in and finish, mixing his pitches and hitting with the breaking ball, fastball, mixed some changeups in there. He used his full repertoire."
Â
Evan Bottone, Jack Smith and Cooper Hinson each had three-hit efforts, with Hinson driving in three runs.
Â
"From an offensive standpoint, it was a gritty performance," Beals commented. "We battled some tough at bats. They got some good arms, but we got some hits and big hits when we needed them."
Â
The Hokies struck for a run in the bottom of the first. However, in the top of the third, Smith and Wil Gubba led off with a single each and a Bottone sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position with one out. Tyler Kamerer then brought home Smith to tie the game with a groundout, 1-1.
Â
Virginia Tech answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, but the Herd didn't wait long to answer.
Â
MU exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth. Mason Onate scored Hinson with a double and scored on a Smith single to make 3-3.
Â
After a Gubba single, Bottone singled home Smith to give the Herd its first lead of the contest, 4-3. Then with two outs, Jackson Halter doubled down the left-field line to score Gubba and Bottone and make a three-run game, 6-3.
Â
Ethan Murdoch followed with a first-pitch homer, his third of the season, to lead off the top of the fifth making it 7-3.
Â
Hinson and Kamerer added an insurance run each in the sixth with singles to extend the advantage to 9-3. The Hokies added a run in bottom half of the frame to make it 9-4.
Â
The Herd offense continued to pile it on as Onate reached on a two-run error in the top of the seventh inning. Then after AJ Havrilla reached on a two-out walk, Hinson drove in his second and third RBI of the game with a double in a 2-2 count to make 13-4.
