HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (6-6) took its series opener on Friday 5-4 over St. Bonaventure at Jack Cook Field. All five of the Herd's runs came with two outs.
Â
"It was a tough game," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "Give St. Bonaventure credit. They played tough and scrapped. Blev had control of the game. They kind of figured him out there late and strung some hits together. I think the real story of the ballgame is our two-out hitting. We got hits when we needed to."
Â
Bryce Blevins earned his third win of the year with nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits and no walks. Charlie Krebs finished the game out of the bullpen with 1.1 hitless innings and two strikeouts for his second save.
Â
Tyler Kamerer picked up his third straight multi-hit game, sixth of the season, with a 2-for-2 game with three RBI and a pair of walks.
Â
The Bonnies got on the board first with a homer from Manuel Castro to leadoff the second.
Â
The Herd didn't wait long to answer as Kamerer reached on a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then on the eighth pitch of his at bat, AJ Havrilla smoked a single to center to score Kamerer and make it 1-1 after the third.
Â
Kamerer came back to the plate in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded and two outs after an Ethan Murdoch single, a single from Jackson Golden and a walk to Evan Bottone. The second baseman sent the first offering to left field for a bases-clearing double to make it 4-1.
Â
After St. Bonaventure tallied two runs in the top of the sixth, Kamerer battled out a 12-pitch walk, including six straight foul balls to lead off the seventh. He advanced to second on a wild pitch with one out. Cooper Hinson then stepped to the dish with Kamerer at second and two outs. The two-out lightning for MU continued as Hinson doubled to right to score Kamerer and make it 5-3.
Â
The Bonnies tallied a run in the top of the eighth, but Krebs held off the visitors to hold on for the win.
