Marshall run-rules St. Bonaventure in game two
Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (7-6) captured its series over St. Bonaventure with an 11-1 run-rule victory on Saturday in game two at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It's good to get a win and keep a winning streak going," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after clinching the series. "You clinch the series but we have another ballgame tomorrow. That we need to take care of. I'm really happy about how we pitched the ball today. Drew Harlow was really, really good. Give our offense some credit. We put six runs on the board (in the first), that certainly allows the pitcher to settle in the ballgame."
Â
Tyler Kamerer, AJ Havrilla, Ethan Murdoch, Oliver Service and Cleary Simpson all have multi-hit games. Kamerer's multi-hit effort marks his fourth straight game with at least two hits.
Â
On the mound Drew Harlow threw 7.0 innings of one run baseball with four strikeouts on seven hits and a walk. Davis Gunn hurled a scoreless frame in the eighth out of the bullpen with a punchout.
Â
The Herd came out of the gates fast as Evan Bottone led off with a hit by pitch and a Kamerer double put a pair in scoring position to start the bottom of the first. Jackson Halter then hit a grounder to third and reached on a fielder's choice with a throwing error allowing Kamerer to score from second to make it 2-0.
Â
Havrilla followed with a double as Murdoch battled a 12-pitch at bat that ended with a RBI single to score Halter. A Service sacrifice fly then scored Havrilla to make it 4-0.
Â
After a walk to Simpson, Jack Smith smoked a double to left center to extend the advantage to 6-0.
Â
The momentum carried into the second, as a Havrilla sacrifice fly and another Murdoch run-scoring single took it to an 8-0 game.
Â
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Service led off with a triple with Simpson following with a two-run homer, his first of the season, to right to make it 10-0.
Â
The Bonnies broke up the shutout with a run in the top of the seventh. However, Wil Gubba singled as Ty Householder and Ben Cohen were each hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the eighth. Patrick Mazur then ended the game with a run-rule, walk-off single through the right side for the 11-1 win to clinch the series.
