HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (20-24) behind a Jackson Halter grand slam and shutdown pitching, picked up a 5-2 win on Wednesday night in Athens, Ohio, over the Ohio Bobcats.
Â
"It's good to be on the winning side of a ballgame, but more importantly I like how we won," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We pitched the ball extremely well. You get the big hit from Halter in the first inning to put four runs on the board. Then our pitching staff for the most part took care of business."
Â
Halter went 2-for-4 at the dish with the grand slam as Evan Bottone scored a pair of runs in the game.
Â
Reliever Alex Caudill earned his first win in the Green and White with 2.1 scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. Davis Gunn earned his third save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Â
Tim Baird struck out both batters he faced as Hunter Richardson hurled 1.1 scoreless frames with a strikeout.
Â
Peyton Jackson threw a scoreless eighth with a pair of strikeouts. Blaine Albright started the game striking out three in 2.2 innings.
Â
Bottone led off the game with a double to center. Tyler Kamerer followed by drawing a walk and a fly out, AJ Havrilla drew a four-pitch free pass to load bases for Halter with one out. With a 3-1 count, Halter kept the ball just fair for a grand slam to put the Herd up 4-0.
Â
The Bobcats answered with a run in each of the second and third frames to cut the MU advantage to 4-2.
Â
Caudill set the Ohio offense down with a perfect fourth and a scoreless fifth ending by stranding a runner at third to keep the score 4-2 after five.
Â
Baird and Richardson followed with a scoreless sixth with Baird striking out a pair.
Â
After walks to Bottone and Hinson and a double play, Havrilla was at the plate with Bottone at third and two outs. Havrilla forced the Bobcat third baseman into an error allowing Bottone to make it 5-2.
Â
Richardson, Jackson and Gunn shut the door on Ohio with scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth innings to seal the win.
