HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (20-25, 10-12 SBC) dropped game one of a three-game series 4-3 in Harrisonburg, Virginia, to the James Madison Dukes (19-25, 9-13 SBC) on Friday.
Â
"The difference between winning and losing in this conference is a very thin line and tonight we missed a few opportunities to win that fine line," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We miss played a ball in the outfield that cost us a run, we slid past the bag on a stolen base and we didn't execute situational offense a few times. We will bounce back and be ready to even the series tomorrow."
Â
Evan Botton and Mason Onate each had multi-hit performances with both going 2-for-3 at the dish in the contest.
Â
Starting pitcher Bryce Blevins hurled 7.0 innings on the mound with six strikeouts as he suffered just his third loss of the season. Reliever Charlie Krebs threw a perfect bottom of the eighth with a pair of punch outs.
Â
Reece Moddy led off the game for the Dukes with a double in the bottom of the first and was doubled home by Josiah Segiun. Ike Schmidly followed with a homer for three quick JMU runs. Jack Guerrero tallied the last run of the inning for the home side on a single to see MU at a 4-0 deficit after the first.
Â
After giving up five hits the four runs in the first, Blevins settled in throwing the final 6.0 frames of his out with no runs and giving up just five hits.
Â
After a double by AJ Havrilla to lead off the top of the second, two batters later Onate doubled him home with two outs to put the Herd on the board.
Â
The Herd tallied its final two runs in the top of the sixth with Botton scoring on a Jackson Halter double and Tyler Kamerer crossing home on a Cooper Hinson ground out.
