HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (21-25, 11-12 SBC) registered its first shutout of the 2026 season, 9-0, to even its series against the James Madison Dukes (19-26, 9-14 SBC) on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Really happy with our entire game today, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. Up and down the lineup we got contributions offensively. We played a grey game of defense as well. Lastly and most importantly, we got an outstanding outing from Drew Harlow and Alex Caudill shut it down to secure the shutout. Big game tomorrow!
Starting pitcher Drew Harlow allowed just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts across 7.0 scoreless innings for his fourth win. Reliever Alex Caudill hurled 2.0 scoreless frames while allowing just three hits and striking out one to finish the game.
At the plate, Tyler Kamerer went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and a RBI. The second baseman now leads the team with 51 runs and 18 doubles this season.
Jackson Halter, Mason Onate and Jack Smith each registered two-hit contests with Halter and Smith also driving in a pair of runs each. Onate and Smith each launched homers in the ballgame with Onate registering the third of his career with Smith hitting his first.
The Herd scored runs in seven of the nine innings. MU started the scoring in the top of the first with a one-out single by Kamerer who reached second on a passed ball and then scored on a Halter single to center to make it 1-0.
Then with a 1-0 count and two outs in the top of the second, Smith made it 2-0 with his homer to left. The barrage continued in the third with Cooper Hinson scoring on a Cam Harthan fielder's choice. After Harthan stole second, Smith collected a two-out single to center, scoring Harthan and making it 4-0.
An AJ Havrilla sacrifice fly scored Kamerer in the fourth as Harthan crossed home in the fifth on a JMU error to make it 6-0.
After a scoreless sixth, Onate hit a two-out homer to right in the seventh with Kamerer doubling home Smith and Evan Botton scoring on a Halter sacrifice fly in the eighth for the final three runs of the game.
