BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Baseball team (14-15, 6-5 SBC) rallied from a three-run deficit, but fell in game two at App State (15-14, 4-7 SBC), 5-4, in Boone, North Carolina, on Friday night.
Tonight was a good baseball game and we just came up short, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. The difference in the game was leadoff batters - they got five of eight on base and all five scored. We only got one leadoff batter on base and that was in our big inning. We again gave really good at bats - we simply need to get them to get us started. We have an opportunity tomorrow to win a road series.
Starting pitcher Drew Harlow threw 7.0 innings while striking out seven as he gave up four runs, three unearned, in a no decision.
Tyler Kamerer led the way at the plate with a career-high four-hit game with two RBI. Evan Bottone and Cooper Hinson collected a pair of hits and a RBI each in the contest.
Trailing 3-0 heading into the seventh, the Herd mounted an offensive rally. Cleary Simpson led off with a hit by pitch and stole second as Jackson Golden followed with a walk. Bottone then stepped to the dish and sent a 2-0 pitch down the right-field line to score Simpson and put a pair in scoring position. Kamerer then registered his fourth single of the contest with a base knock up the middle to score two and tie the game 3-3.
After a Jackson Halter walk and a double play, Kamerer stood at third with two outs and Hinson at the plate. The sophomore singled up the middle on a 2-2 pitch to plate Kamerer give MU a 4-3 lead.
However, the Mountaineers answered with a run in each of the bottom of the seventh and eighth frames to take a 5-4 advantage. App State held of Marshall in the top of the ninth to even the series.
