MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (14-17) fell 12-2 in eight innings to the No. 17 West Virginia Mountaineers (22-7) on Wednesday night in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Reliever Blaine Albright struck out three in 1.1 innings. Peyton Jackson hurled a scoreless frame.

AJ Havrilla went 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk as Cooper Hinson went 2-for-2 with a walk and hit by pitch.

The Mountaineers opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first.

MU answered with its first run in the top of the second after a one-out single by Cam Harthan followed by a steal of second and a wild pitch had him standing at third with two outs. Jack Smith smoked a single up the middle with a full count to plate Harthan and make it 3-1.

WVU tallied another pair of runs in the bottom of the second, but after Tyler Kamerer and Hinson were each hit by a pitch, Havrilla singled to center field. The base knock scored Kamerer and cut the deficit to 5-2.

Jackson hurled a scoreless bottom of the third, stranding a runner at second with a strikeout.

Hunter Richardson followed with scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, including a double play to end the fourth.

WVU rallied with three two-out runs in the bottom of the sixth, another pair in the seventh and two in the eighth to close the game.
