HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (15-17, 7-6 SBC) earned a series-opening win on Friday, 8-1, over the Old Dominion Monarchs (15-18, 4-9 SBC) at Jack Cook Field.
Â
"It was a really good ballgame all around for the Herd today," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "It starts on the mound with Bryce Blevins. It sets the tempo. The hit in the first inning, the home run by Havrilla, is huge to give a pitcher like Bryce a little cushion and a lead early on in the ballgame and he took over from there."
Â
Bryce Blevins recorded a quality start with 8.1 innings of one-run baseball with seven strikeouts giving up six hits and three walks for his sixth win of the year.
Â
AJ Havrilla had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with his sixth homer of the season, now tied for the team lead, with four RBI. Evan Bottone, Tyler Kamerer, Jackson Halter and Oliver Service all added two-hit efforts with Halter also driving in two RBI.
Â
The Herd kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first. Kamerer registered a one-out single and then stood at first with two outs after a flyout. Havrilla then smoked a 1-1 pitch over the right field to make it 2-0 with a two-run homer.
Â
MU then added a run in the bottom of the fifth as Oliver Service crossed on a double play followed Havrilla driving Bottone and Kamerer with a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-0.
Â
In the top of the sixth, Blevins allowed a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. The senior lefty, however, stranded the bases loaded with a strikeout to get out of the jam.
Â
Then in the bottom of the seventh Cooper Hinson had a two-out RBI single as Halter followed with a two-RBI base knock to make it 8-0.
Â
Marshall's shutout bid was foiled by a Monarchs solo homer by Maverick Stallings in the top of the ninth. However, Peyton Jackson came on in relief of Blevins and registered the final two outs of the game.
