CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (21-27) dropped a contest in Charleston, West Virginia, 7-2 to the No. 15 West Virginia Mountaineers (32-12) on Tuesday night at GoMart Ballpark.

"Frustrating to lose the game," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "What a great crowd. What a great opportunity tonight and unfortunately, we didn't play to our best ability. Just a bit too many free bases we gave them (that led to) some opportunities on the offensive side."

Evan Bottone registered a 2-for-3 night at the plate with a double for his 23rd multi-hit game of the season.

Blaine Albright and Hunter Richardson each threw scoreless frames as starting pitcher Landen Doll, A.J. McAninch and Richardson each struck out a pair.

WVU struck first in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs, including a Gavin Kelly solo homer, and scored two more in the bottom of the second with a homer by Matt Ineich and Kelly's second long ball to make it 4-0.

In the top of the fourth, Bottone led off the frame with a double to right and was singled to third by Tyler Kamerer. A Jackson Halter sacrifice brought home Bottone to make it 4-1.

The Mountaineers tallied a run in each of the fifth and sixth frames to see MU at a 6-1 deficit.

Ethan Murdoch launched an opposite-field homer, his fourth of the season, to right to lead off the seventh and make it 6-2.

However, WVU added an insurance run in the eighth and hung on for the win.

UP NEXT
The Herd hosts ULM for its final home series of the season starting Friday with a 6 p.m. first pitch at Jack Cook Field.
