Marshall Baseball Takes Series Opener Over ULM

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (22-27, 12-13 SBC) picked up a 7-4 win to open its series against the ULM Warhawks on Friday night at Jack Cook Field.

"It's obviously good to get the Friday night win in game one of the series," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "The way we like to play, especially with Bryce on the mound, how he pitched and we played really good defense. All the way around we played really good defense. In the ninth, we made two really good plays to finish the ballgame. Charlie Krebs was really good finishing it. The nicest thing that we needed as a ballclub was a comeback factor."

Jackson Halter launched a pair of homers and registered a three-RBI game. Evan Bottone went 3-for-4 at the plate for his 24th multi-hit game of the season and 12th three-hit contest to go with three runs scored.

Starting pitcher Bryce Blevins received a no decision giving up four runs in 7.0 innings on eight hits with two walks and striking out six. Reliever Charlie Krebs earned his second win with 2.0 perfect innings to finish the game in the eighth and ninth.

The Herd got on the board first with Bottone crossing home on an AJ Havrilla fielder's choice in the bottom of the first.

The Warhawks tied the game in the top of the first, but on a 2-1 pitch with one out, Halter hit a homer to right to put MU back on top 2-1 after three.

ULM tied the game with a run in the top of the fourth and took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, a Cooper Hinson sacrifice fly scored Bottone to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Marshall saw the bats get going in the bottom of the eighth for a rally. Jack Smith led off with a double down the left-field line. After a strikeout, Smith advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bottone then reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second to put runners in scoring position with one out.

With a full count, Tyler Kamerer singled up the middle to score both runners and gave MU a 5-4 lead. Then after a pitching change, Halter sat with a 3-1 count hit his second homer of the game to right center to score Kamerer and make it 7-4.

Krebs then retired the final three batters on nine pitches to seal the win.
