HUNTINGTON, W. Va.- Marshall Track and Field is back home Friday, where it will kick off the fifth-annual Thundering Herd Invitational. The two-day meet, which begins at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, will take place at the Jeff Small Track within the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Complex.
The first event featuring Herd athletes is the weight throw, which begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. Day two of the Invitational begins with pole vault at 9 a.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 12 and under, and $2 for groups of 10 or more people. With a student ID, Marshall students can gain free admission.
Aside from Marshall, twelve other teams from eight conferences and seven states will compete in the meet. Those twelve teams are: Ohio, Xavier, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Northern Kentucky, Morehead State, Saint Louis, Belmont, Austin Peay, Charlotte, Winthrop, and Jacksonville State.
The Thundering Herd is looking to follow its great performance in the Invitational last year, when it finished second overall in team points, broke two records, and had 21 top-10 finishes.
Safiyyah Mitchell, who holds the third-best 60-meter hurdle time in C-USA, will go up against the current conference leader in Charlotte's Kyra Atkins. Hasana Clark, whose best weight throw mark is second among C-USA athletes, and Reneese Batson, whose best mark is sixth, will be up against two other C-USA athletes with top-12 conference marks.
Pole vaulters Lauren Zaglifa and Macie Majoy, whose best marks are first and third in the C-USA, respectively, will face some strong competition from Austin Peay. Finally, look for Elena Marchand to build on her excellent first-place shot put finish at the KeyDet Invitational.
"We had a great time and a good performance at the KeyDet," said assistant coach Caleb Bowen. "I want to give a tip of the cap to Christianna Dogan for breaking the school record in the 500-meter. Now we're looking to roll on from that great experience into this meet. It'll be particularly exciting to go up against Charlotte, a great fellow C-USA competitor."
