MU dominates 60-meter hurdles
HUNTINGTON, W. Va.- In the fifth annual Thundering Herd Invitational, Marshall track and field finished second overall out of thirteen schools. Its total of 108 team points was sparked by four event wins and 17 athletes finishing in the top five of their events.
Charlotte took first overall with 142.50 team points. Austin Peay finished third, tallying 73 points. Belmont (54.5) and Saint Louis (54) rounded out the rest of the top five.
The Herd started off day two hot, with a string of top finishes throughout the 10 a.m. field events. Pole vaulters Macie Majoy and Lauren Zaglifa tied for third, with a mark of 3.80 meters. The mark wasn't far off from the school record of 3.86 meters, one Zaglifa set herself in the Marshall Opener. Zaglifa is currently the C-USA leader, and Majoy figures to slide into second place.
Elena Marchand continued her dominance in shot put, finishing first in the event for the third time this season. Marchand's top mark was 14.31 meters, and her lowest attempt of the event still might have landed her a first place finish.
Senior Sarah Bever won the high jump, recording a mark of 1.63 meters. Sophomore Torie Derrow's mark of 1.58 meters was also good for fourth in the event.
The Herd took over the 60 meter hurdles final, with three Marshall athletes finishing in the top four. For the third time this season, Safiyyah Mitchell managed first place in the event. Her 8.53 time in the finals was just off the Thundering Herd Invitational record of 8.49 (one Mitchell set herself last season). With a time of 8.77, Christianna Dogan finished second in the event, while Taylor Robinson finished fourth (8.79).
Denisha West took second place in triple jump, recording her best mark of the season (11.83 meters). Takira Williams also finished fifth in the event.
To cap off the day, Marshall's 4x400 meter relay team of Brandy Elysee, Sydnei Taylor, Ashonti Warner, and Danere'a White finished in third place. It was the fourth time this season that a Marshall relay team placed in the top four.
"We had a good feeling about the 60 meter Hurdles, so it was great to see those top finishes," said assistant coach Caleb Bowen. "Our pole vaulters also deserve some recognition for jumping close to the school record, as well as Christianna Dogan for performing well in all her events. Now we're focused on preparing for next weekend, with half the team heading to Akron and the other half heading to South Carolina."
