HUNTINGTON, W.Va.. - Marshall track and field team is back in a big way this weekend, with the Herd set to compete in two separate competitions. Part of the team will head to Akron, Ohio, where it will compete in the Akron Invitational. The rest of the team travels to Columbia, South Carolina for the Carolina Challenge.

The Akron Invitational, which takes place at the Stile Athletics Field House, will consist of nineteen teams and can be watched via the ESPN3 live stream (linked above). Competing athletes will be divided up into two divisions: blue division and gold division.

Marshall will be sending twenty-one of their own athletes (sixteen from the women's side and five from the men's side).

The three-day competition officially kicks off Thursday with women's discus, where Elena Marchand competes in the event for the first time all season. Herd athletes also compete in long jump and the 5000-meter on Friday, but the bulk of the competition occurs on Saturday.

The Herd will have a good opportunity to showcase themselves against strong competition—six top-100 ranked athletes will be competing (three in weight throw, two in the 3000-meter and one in high jump).

Twelve Marshall track and field athletes will be making the trip down to Columbia, South Carolina for the 2019 Carolina Challenge.

The competition has 48 competing teams in total, headlined by a few of South Carolina's SEC rivals: Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee.

Kayla Haywood will get things rolling for the Herd, when she competes in the 60-meter run at 11 a.m. on Friday morning. The 60-meter hurdles will follow, and the day will be capped off by the 400-meter race in the evening. Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Marshall athletes will take part in six more events, including pole vault, long jump, high jump, triple jump, 200-meter and the 4x400 relay.
