Herd Track and Field Completes Akron Invitational and Carolina Challenge
Next up for the Herd is the Chipotle Marshall Invitational, Feb. 8-9, in the Chris Cline Indoor Facility
AKRON, Ohio – Marshall track and field finished a busy final day at the Akron Invitational, one that saw Herd athletes competing in sixteen different events.
The Thundering Herd kicked off the day with some distance events--with freshman Madelyn Garrison finishing fourth in the women's 3000-meter. Alexandria Evans also finished eighth in the event, and Mary Kerby finished thirteenth. Coy Smith, a sophomore on the Marshall men's cross country team, finished fourth in the men's 3000-meter (blue division), while senior Nickolas Schmidt placed fourth in the gold division of the event.
The bulk of Marshall's day, however, was packed with field events. Freshman MaryAnn Adebayo put forth a strong body of work, finishing second in shot put (blue division) and fourth in weight throw (blue division).
In what was a highly competitive gold division shot put matchup, Elena Marchand finished fourth. Including Marchand, three of the top four finishers own marks ranked in the national top-100, per Direct Athletics.
Weight throw (gold division), a similarly competitive event, saw Hasana Clark finish third and Reneese Batson finish fourth. The top five finishers all happen to hold top-100 weight throw marks.
COLUMBIA, S.C.- With much of the team wrapping up its final day in Akron, the Herd had a fairly short day of events at the Carolina Challenge.
Marshall began the day with pole vault, where Macie Majoy and Lauren Zaglifa tied for fourth in the event (a best mark of 3.70 meters). Hannah Jefcoat of Tennessee finished first in the event, with a mark that now ranks in the top-25 nationally.
Closing out the Herd's day, sophomore Josie Raines finished eighth in long jump, senior Sarah Bever finished eighth in high jump and Denisha West finished ninth in triple jump.
The Herd will be back in action at home next week, where they will compete in the Chipotle Marshall Invitational, Feb. 8-9. It's their final competition at home this season, and the following weekend they embark on a trip to the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.
