Marshall tops EKU, Wright State

HUNTINGTON, W. Va.- On its last day of home competition, Marshall track and field delivered a worthy finale. The Thundering Herd won the Fifth Annual Qdoba Marshall Invitational, finishing with 187 team points. Second place Eastern Kentucky totaled 107, while Wright State finished third with 94.

Marshall got the day rolling with a handful of top finishes in the morning field events. In shot put, senior Elena Marchand won first place with a mark of 14.31 meters. It was her fourth victory of the season, previously grabbing wins at the Marshall Opener, the KeyDet Invitational and the Thundering Herd Invitational. Hasana Clark placed second, finishing with a mark that should have her joining Marchand in the Conference USA top 10. Freshman MaryAnn Adebayo rounded out the top five.

In long jump, the Herd saw three athletes finish in the top five. Seniors Lauren George and Sarah Bever finished second and fourth, respectively, while sophomore Josie Raines finished fifth.

Torie Derrow came in second in the high jump, while Denisha West and Takira Williams finished third and fourth in the triple jump.

The team did not let up as the competition shifted over to track events. Safiyyah Mitchell, Taylor Robinson, and Hanna Carreon each won their heats in the 60-meter hurdles preliminary round, while Christianna Dogan and Ashonti Warner also finished with finals-qualifying times. Mitchell's prelim time of 8.46 was her best of the season, one that has her ranked second in Conference USA.

Mitchell went on to win the 60-meter hurdles final, while Taylor Robinson finished in second.

Both Kayla Haywood and Talor Wilkerson won their heats in the 60-meter dash prelims, and Kayla went on to win the final with a time of 7.70. Wilkerson finished in third, clocking in at 7.90.

Following the 60-meter dash preliminary round, everyone turned their attention to a brief senior recognition ceremony. The following seniors were honored for their Marshall athletic careers: Reneese Batson, Bever, Clark, Adriana Cook, George, Haywood, Heidi Heiniger, Marchand, Abigail Short, Nickolas Schmidt and Daniel Green.

In the 400-meter, Warner finished fourth, and Alyssa Long, usually a distance runner, finished seventh.

Madelyn Garrison's 800-meter time of 2:20.16, a new personal best, was good for fourth place. Bever finished in seventh.

The 200-meter, which consisted of 19 competing athletes, saw four Marshall athletes finish within the top five. Brandy Elysee took first, Haywood took second, Wilkerson finished fourth, and Danere'a White finished in fifth.

To cap off day, Marshall men's cross country athletes Alexander Minor, Alex Foote and Dylan Rich took fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the men's 3000-meter.

"We felt like it was a really fun meet overall," said assistant coach Caleb Bowen. "It was smaller, but ultimately more competitive. Weight throw was, of course, the highlight of the weekend, but the DMR team ran well and Madelyn Garrison recorded a personal best in the 800-meter. Mary Kerby also had a good 3000-meter, and it was great to see Alyssa Long get experience in a shorter distance event like the 400-meter."

Later next week the Herd will head to Birmingham, Alabama for the Conference USA Indoor Championships. The competition will close out the indoor half of the season, before a month long break leads up to the start of the outdoor season.
