HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Herd baseball (20-15, 8-7 C-USA) took the series from Western Kentucky with an 11-7 win in game one of the doubleheader, two of the series, but narrowly missed the sweep falling 16-11 after holding a lead into the middle innings of game on the day.

Game 1
Wade Martin started the game on the bump and went a season-high two innings. Martin gave up no hits and a walk while striking out a batter in his two scoreless innings.

Marshall got the scoring started in the bottom of the second as Geordon Blanton launched his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, after Andrew Zban reached on a bunt single.

Ryan Falls came in relief of Martin to begin the third. After Falls worked out of a jam in the top of the third, the Hilltoppers tied it up in the top of the fourth with a Sanford homer and a Lambert sacrifice fly. The runs marked the end of a streak of 16-scoreless innings.

However, in the bottom of the fifth, Zach Inskeep brought Erik Rodriguez home on a sac fly and Tucker Linder singled through the right side to bring home Elvis Peralta to give the Herd a 4-2 lead and extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

WKU took its first lead of game, 5-4, after a three-run top of the sixth. The Herd had something to say about it in the bottom of the inning. Marshall's Inskeep struck for an RBI single, Linder followed that up with a two-RBI single and Rey Pastrana closed out the six-run inning with a three-run bomb to left center, his fifth of the season, to put Marshall on top 10-5.

The Hilltoppers struck for a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pull within three, but Peralta added an insurance run on a dinger, his second of the series and fourth of the season, in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 11-7 victory.

D'Andre Knight was credited with his third win of the season. The combination of Sam Boone and Michael Guerrero pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, while striking out a combined three batters.

Game 2
After Zac McNeel went 0.1 of an inning in his start, Philip Hoffman and Robert Kwiatkowski were rolling through the next 5.2 giving up just four hits and no runs.

In that same span of relief from Hoffman and Kwiatkowski, the Herd came back from a 3-0 deficit. Andrew Zban doubled home Luke Edwards in the bottom of the third. Marshall followed that up with five-two runs in the bottom of the fourth, including RBI-singles by Edwards, Zban and Blanton to go with Zban scoring on a wild pitch and a RBI-triple by Rodriguez, to put the Herd on top 6-3. The triple was Rodriguez's team-leading sixth of the season.

Rodriguez brought home two more runs on a single in the bottom of sixth. After Rodriguez was caught stealing, Peralta hit a two-out homer, his third of the series and fifth of the season, to put the Herd up 9-3 after six.

WKU answered with seven runs, six of which were unearned, to take a 10-9 lead after the top of the seventh. However, Zban tied it up with a no-doubt about it dinger to right, his third of the season, in the bottom of the seventh.

But the Hilltoppers struck for five in the eighth, and after a Linder sac fly scored a run for the Herd in the bottom of the eighth, struck for one more in the ninth as the Hilltoppers took game three of the series 16-11.
