Baseball Struggles in Series-Opening Loss at UAB

Marshall managed one run on seven hits

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Marshall baseball (22-19, 9-10 C-USA) was defeated by the UAB Blazers, 9-1, Friday night in Birmingham.

UAB scored seven runs in the first three innings, scoring four in the first, one in the second and two in the third.

Garett Priestley came on in relief of starter Joshua Shapiro to begin the fourth. Priestley allowed a couple of base runners in his inning of work, but stranded them at first and second with an inning-ending strikeout.

The Herd collected its first run with two outs in the seventh as Rey Pastrana doubled down the left-field line as Raul Cabrera singled up the middle to bring him home.

UAB added two more runs tin the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead to 9-1.
Â
Priestley, along with Philip Hoffman, Bryan Callaly, Sam Boone, Hunter Sexton and Austen Martinez combined to give up just two runs on three hits out of the bullpen in the final six innings.

Tucker Linder extend his on-base streak to 26 games with a base hit in the second, while Elvis Peralta, Jr., reached base safely for the 20th consecutive game with a hit in the first.
