Rodriguez recorded his eighth triple of the season to set a new program record

NORFOLK, Va. – Erik Rodriguez broke the single-season program for triples, but the Thundering Herd baseball team (24-26, 11-15) falls 9-8 to Old Dominion on Sunday in the series finale after holding a five-run lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
The early innings was a back-and-forth affair between Marshall and ODU. The Herd's Tucker Linder and Rey Pastrana recorded back-to-back leadoff singles to begin the second inning. After Pastrana was caught stealing, Jaren Lovely scored Linder on a groundout to give Marshall an early 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs answered with a run in the bottom of the second. However, Geordon Blanton brought home Luke Edwards after Edwards led the third off with a single, but ODU struck back to tie it up 2-2 in the bottom of the inning.
Starting pitcher Ryan Capuano exited after three innings giving up two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out three batters.
Philip Hoffman came on in relief throwing a scoreless inning giving up a hit and striking out one Monarch.
Erik Rodriguez gave the Herd the lead back with a two-out single in the fifth to score Blanton. Ryan Falls relieved Hoffman to start the bottom of the fifth and exited after a third-of-an-inning with two walks and runners at first and second. Michael Guerrero came on and after the runner from second scored, recorded the next two outs to keep the scored tied.
Marshall broke the game open in the top of the sixth. Elvis Peralta, Jr., led the inning off with a single followed by a Pastrana one-out single to have runners at first and second with one out. Zach Inskeep, who pinch hit for Lovely, moved Peralta over to third as there were two outs in the inning.
Raul Cabrera then smoked a single up the middle to score Peralta and then Edwards doubled down the left-field line to score Pastrana and Cabrera to make it 6-3 in favor of MU.
After Guerrero through a shutout inning in the bottom of the sixth, Rodriguez made Marshall history as he led off the seventh with his eighth triple of the season to set a new single-season program record. Shane Hanon brought him home two pitches later with a bloop single to right. Pastrana added another insurance run with a two-single to left to score Hanon and make it 8-3 in favor of Marshall.
The Monarchs struck for three runs in the bottom of the eighth with coming in part to a pair of MU errors in the inning to make it 8-6 Herd.
The Herd couldn't take advantage of a leadoff double by Linder in the top of the ninth as the score remained 8-6. Guerrero walked the leadoff batter and then exited the game as D'Andre Knight made his way to the mound from the bullpen. ODU's Andy Garriola took Knight's first offering over the wall in right to tie the game, 8-8.
Guerrero's final line was three and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits and four walks. The righty also struck out three Monarchs.
ODU won the game on a bases loaded wild pitch after an error by Cabrera extended the inning.
NOTES
- Guerrero's 3.2 innings pitched are a career high.
- Sunday was Capuano's first weekend start.
- The Herd went 20-for-48 with two outs in the series.
